Vitamin D supplementation in health and latent tuberculosis promotes regulatory T cell expression

Background: Vitamin D acts as an immune modulator. Its effect in mycobacterial infection may be considered in future therapeutic approaches. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen (CTLA4) is involved in T cell tolerance and its expression rises with T cell receptor activation.
Methods: CTLA-4 / FoxP3 expression and the effect of vitamin D supplementation in health and latent TB was measured using flow cytometry. Cells were stimulated with (Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B) SEB or Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) and the effect of either 1,25(OH)2D3 or 25(OH)D3 on the above parameters was recorded.
Conclusion: Vitamin D enhances the expression of both T reg markers and CTLA4 immune regulatory receptor in both health and latent TB and is suggestive of the immune regulatory role of vitamin D
